Conan O’Brien opens shop on West Coast
Tuesday, June 02, 2009
Conan O'Brien helmed his first Tonight Show Monday in Universal City Monday, marking a break from Jay and Johnny's historic location in Burbank.
"I think I've timed this move perfectly," Conan said in his opening monologue. "I'm on a last-place network, I moved to a state that's bankrupt and The Tonight Show is sponsored by General Motors."
The move ahead one hour did not appear to affect O'Briens sharp talent for edgy mirth, and with his first guest, Will Ferrell, he kept his humor squarely in the wheelhouse of his fan base.
Ferrell had a list of recommended sights and sounds of L.A., O'Brien's new burg. His advice? Make friends with an LAPD officer, and try that renowned L.A. burger institution, a little place called "Burger King."
Regarding Conan's new backdrop: We'll have to take another look, but was that L.A. City Hall towering over Griffith Park behind the desk? It seems the geographical terrain matches the interior comedy stylings of O'Brien's mind.
