Get Michael Jackson memorial tickets
Friday, July 03, 2009
Michael Jackson fans can register for free tickets to the singer's public memorial service set for Tuesday, July 7, at 10 a.m.
The service will be held at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, and will be simulcast on big screens inside the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live across the street.
Organizers say 17,500 tickets will be distributed to fans free of charge: 11,000 of those will be for Staples Center and 6,500 will be for Nokia Theatre.
No tickets will be sold for the event. Fans must register for a lottery to win tickets on Staples Center's Web site, http://www.staplescenter.com/memorial.php.
Registering for tickets does not guarantee the registrant tickets. The tickets will be randomly distributed; it is not first-come-first-serve.
Registration for tickets is now open and ends at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday, July 4. People will be notified on Sunday if they have been chosen to receive tickets. Two tickets will be issued to each randomly selected attendee.
Those who get tickets will be issued wristbands in hopes of deterring scalpers.
Officials expect hundreds of thousands of entries to try to get tickets. Only one entry per person will be accepted, and the offer is valid to U.S. residents only.
The service will not be simulcast on screens outside the arena as previously reported. City officials are asking all fans who do not get tickets to stay home and watch the memorial service live on TV or online, and not gather outside the arena.
Police officials say there will be what they call a hard closure around Staples Center on Tuesday. If you don't have a ticket, you won't even be allowed into the immediate area.
Officials also say there will be no funeral procession.
No other details were given about what fans will see at the memorial.
